The room was dark and quiet, a single candle the only source of light. A hacking, wet cough caused the body on the bed to shake violently, the young woman at the bedside quickly leaning forward with a cup of water. As the cough subsided, the middle aged woman on the bed slowly sipped some of the water with the youth's aid. Green eyes, large with fear and worry, stared out from a pale face at the woman on the bed who had gone very still.
"...Mama?"
"I'm still here, child." the woman managed between gasping breaths and a cough before continuing, "But I fear I won't be for much longer."
"Mama, no! Don't talk like that, you'll--"
"Hush, girl!
